Heather Guertin
b.1981, Massachusetts. Lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
For Heather Guertin, showing up and starting is one way to encourage an epiphany. From Massachusetts, Heather studied painting at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and moved to New York in 2009. She is represented in New York by Brennan and Griffin and by Agustina Ferreyra in Puerto Rico. For Heather, priority was on finding a studio, no matter what she had to sacrifice to have space to work. In her paintings she pushes to create a cohesive line between figuration, abstraction, and quotation. As a surrogate for her painting practice, she also writes novellas and performs stand-up comedy. For her, work in the studio is focussed, typically spending most days painting her large canvasses. Her work allows the viewer to understand something that can’t be spoken or explained. Heather sees time as a way to equalize her work, allowing clarity to decide if a work is finished. By combining art, writing and comedy she recognizes that creativity can exist as many forms within one practice.
